Hand and Wrist Surgery

get your grip back! hand surgery for improved functionality!

restore your hands to their former glory with our top-rated surgeons

Hand surgery is a broad term that covers many different types of procedures. Orthopaedic & Plastic surgeons who perform hand surgery seek to restore hand and finger function.

The need for hand surgery can arise from a variety of issues including arthritis, carpal tunnel syndrome, ganglions, De Quervain’s and Dupuytren’s.

During an expert consultation, our hand surgeons will assess, diagnose and advise on and progress to treatment quickly for a range of different issues with hands and wrists.

At the Grange, we offer various treatment options for discomfort in hands and wrists. We commonly treat conditions such as:

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is caused by pressure on a nerve in the wrist, leading to tingling, numbness, and pain in the hand and fingers. If self-treatment at home is unsuccessful, surgery under local anesthetic is recommended to relieve pressure on the nerve.

Trigger Finger

Trigger Finger occurs when tendons become caught in the tunnels in the hand, leading to stiffness, intermittent locking, and disrupted hand rhythm. If left untreated, it can cause persistent stiffness and soreness.

Dupuytren Contracture

Dupuytren’s Contracture causes one or more fingers to bend towards the palm of the hand, making it difficult to straighten them completely. Surgery is performed under local anesthesia with the patient awake to divide or remove the contracted tissue.

Ganglion Cysts

Ganglion Cysts are soft, gel filled masses that often change in size and are harmless. If the cyst doesn't reduce in size within six months, causing functional difficulties or pain, surgery to remove it would be a good option.

Recovery and aftercare

It is important to remember that every human body and hand is different and therefore recovery will differ between patient.

We rely on our hands a huge amount in day-to-day life and that is why we understand the urge to put off having a surgical procedure on them. However that being said it is also the main reason we need to look after them.
Depending on the procedure the recovery time will differ.
After a Carpal Tunnel Surgery or Dupuytrens Contracture your hand will be bandaged and you will have to keep this dry for the time that it is on.
Recovery time is around 2-4 weeks, however it can take longer before full strength and power returns to the hand. You should be getting back to driving by 2 weeks.

Trigger Finger release and Ganglion Cysts are less invasive procedures and therefore require less downtime and recovery period. Each procedure requires 2-3 weeks before returning to normal activity and around a week before going back to driving.
With regards to time off work, it will be dependent on what your job is but most will be back within 1 to 4 weeks.
