CUTANEOUS SQUAMOUS CELL CARCINOMA: WHEN EXPERT SURGERY MATTERS
A lesion on a sun-damaged scalp can look deceptively small, but a cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (cSCC) can extend well beyond what is visible on the surface. This case demonstrates the importance of specialist assessment and treatment.

The scalp is a particularly important site for cSCC because of its cumulative exposure to ultraviolet radiation. Patients with significant sun damage may also have multiple areas of actinic keratosis and further skin cancers, making ongoing surveillance an essential part of their care.
In this case, the tumour was removed and the resulting defect reconstructed with careful attention to both oncological safety and aesthetic outcome.
For skin cancer, the aim is not simply to remove what can be seen. It is to understand the tumour, plan the excision properly, achieve clearance and reconstruct the defect appropriately.
