What are biostimulators?

Biostimulators are injectable treatments that encourage your skin to produce its own collagen. While a hyaluronic acid filler adds volume instantly, a biostimulator works more gradually, prompting your body to rebuild the support structure it has lost over time.

Because the improvement comes from your own collagen, results develop slowly and naturally over a number of weeks and can last much longer than traditional fillers. It's a subtle approach that's perfect if you'd like to look refreshed without anyone being able to put their finger on why.

Biostimulators can help with:

  • Early skin laxity and a softening jawline
  • Hollowing in the temples and cheeks
  • Thinning or crêpey skin
  • Lines and folds around the mouth
  • Overall loss of firmness and facial structure

Sculptra.

Made by Galderma, Sculptra was the first injectable of its kind and remains one of the most trusted. It's made from poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA), a biocompatible material that the body naturally breaks down and that has been used in medicine for many years, including in dissolvable stitches.

Once injected, Sculptra's microparticles stimulate your skin to produce new collagen, gradually restoring lost structure to areas such as the temples, cheeks and jawline. The change is so gradual that people tend to notice you look well, rather than that you've had something done.

Novuma by Vivacy.

Novuma is a new-generation biostimulator, brought to the UK by Vivacy, the French injectable specialists behind the Stylage range. It's made from smooth, round calcium hydroxylapatite (CaHA) microspheres suspended in a soft gel, with a higher concentration of CaHA than many comparable products.

Novuma works in two ways. The gel gives a subtle, immediate lift and firmness, then the CaHA microspheres act as a scaffold that encourages your skin to build its own collagen over the following months. It's ideal for redefining the jawline and face oval, supporting the cheeks and temples, and firming the lower face.

Izzi will assess whether Novuma or Sculptra suits your goals best

Your questions answered.

How are biostimulators different from fillers?

Fillers place volume exactly where it's needed and give an instant result. Biostimulators encourage your body to make its own collagen, so the improvement is gradual, subtle and longer lasting. Many people benefit from a combination of both.

When will I see results?

With Novuma you'll notice a subtle lift straight away. With both treatments, the real results build over the following two to three months as new collagen forms.

How long do results last?

Sculptra results can last up to two years or more. Novuma typically lasts around 12 to 18 months. Everyone's skin is different, and a maintenance session can help keep results going.

Is there any downtime?

Most people return to normal activities straight away. Mild swelling, tenderness or bruising for a few days is common. We advise avoiding strenuous exercise, alcohol and facial treatments for 24 to 48 hours.

Who is suitable?

Biostimulators are ideal for adults noticing early to moderate loss of firmness or volume. They're not suitable during pregnancy or breastfeeding, or with certain autoimmune conditions or active skin infections. Izzi will check your suitability at consultation.

How does the consultation work?

Your consultation with Izzi costs £50 and is fully redeemable against your treatment. She'll assess your skin, talk through your goals and medical history, and recommend the right treatment or combination for you. There's never any pressure to book on the day.
